Commercial solar panel maintenance and monitoring
Commercial solar panels require very little ongoing maintenance. There are no moving parts, and modern panels are designed to withstand UK weather conditions for 25+ years. However, a structured maintenance programme ensures optimal performance and protects your investment.
Cleaning
In the UK, rainfall generally keeps panels sufficiently clean. However, panels on flat roofs with low tilt angles, or in areas with high dust, pollen or bird activity, benefit from annual cleaning. Professional cleaning costs £3–£8 per panel and can improve output by 3–10% on dirty panels.
Monitoring
All modern commercial solar systems include monitoring software that tracks generation in real time. Cloud-based platforms (such as SolarEdge, Enphase, Huawei FusionSolar) provide dashboards showing daily, weekly and annual generation, alerts for underperformance, and inverter-level diagnostics.
Regular monitoring review (weekly or monthly) allows early detection of faults such as inverter failures, panel degradation or shading issues. Many installers offer remote monitoring as part of an O&M contract.
Inverter replacement
String inverters typically have a lifespan of 10–15 years, meaning one replacement may be needed during the 25-year panel warranty period. Replacement costs range from £1,500 to £5,000 depending on inverter size. Micro-inverters last longer (20–25 years) but cost more upfront.
Annual inspection
An annual visual inspection and electrical test is recommended. This covers panel condition, mounting integrity, cable connections, isolator switches and inverter performance. Most O&M providers include this in their service contracts at £150–£500 per year depending on system size.
Operations and maintenance (O&M) contracts
Many commercial solar owners take out O&M contracts covering monitoring, annual inspection, cleaning and emergency callouts. Typical costs are £8–£15 per kWp per year. For a 100 kWp system, that is £800–£1,500 per year — well under 5% of annual savings.
