Leisure centres and sports facilities are among the highest energy consumers in the commercial sector. Swimming pools, gym equipment, floodlighting, HVAC and hot water systems drive annual electricity bills that can exceed £100,000. Energy consumption profile

A typical local authority leisure centre consumes 500,000–1,500,000 kWh of electricity per year. Swimming pool facilities dominate consumption through water heating (often via heat pumps), pool hall ventilation, filtration pumps and lighting. Gym areas, sports halls and reception facilities add further load. Much of this consumption is continuous, giving leisure centres higher solar self-consumption rates than many other building types.

Solar and heat pump synergy

Many leisure centres are transitioning from gas boilers to air-source or water-source heat pumps for pool heating. This increases electricity consumption but also increases the value of solar — generating free electricity to power the heat pumps during daylight hours. Local authority-owned leisure centres can access Salix Finance for interest-free loans. Trust-operated centres (such as those run by Everyone Active, GLL, or Freedom Leisure) may need to work with the building's freeholder (usually the local authority) but can often access similar funding routes.
